Recently it was stated that the United States Post Office would allow for living people to be commemorated on stamps in the upcoming year. This was a huge departure for an organization that has for many years been evolving its process of choosing stamp subjects. From the time they commemorated Elvis until recent year’s inclusion of stamps featuring characters from The Simpsons, the world of collectible stamps has been changing.
When it comes to coin collections, that evolution has been understandably slower. The United States Mint does not need to turn a profit, the U.S Postal Service does. This means that the Mint can rest comfortably on its laurels and ideals, without evolving its process of choosing coin subjects, most of which have been established for decades.
That said, perhaps it is time for our coin holders to reflect the ground breaking work of American artists. From Chuck Berry to Arthur Miller, Jim Henson to Orson Welles, in many ways to the outside world we are a country defined by our artistic output. It has made us a globe conquering force in culture and has maintained a level of engagement even as our country turned its back on globalization.
Coins celebrating our cultural heritage as well as our political one could be a great collector’s item should the mint consider it.
