With so many protests around the world, it’s interesting to put our moment in perspective. Beginning of the 21st century, fairly interesting time. We are now three generations removed from the greatest war the world has ever known. Three presidents from that era are commonly acknowledged as some of the best. But its unanimous that FDR was better than all the others; he often ranks in front of Washington and only behind Lincoln as our greatest president, and he is on the dime, and a part of many coin collections.
Before official involvement Roosevelt offered a Lend-Lease program to the Allies, which consisted of military and financial aid and ultimately escalated until full American involvement in the war, after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. However, he was very insistent that efforts be concentrated at Germany before Japan. By 1943 it became clear that the Allies would win the war, and Roosevelt and Churchill began post-war planning, favoring a strong United Nations. When Roosevelt died on April 12, 1945, Allies were approaching Berlin.
Roosevelt is the only president to have won four terms. His strength, not only during the war, but during his previous two terms, has placed his face in many coin supplies. Coin storage for Roosevelt dimes is easy to find and makes it fascinating to think about a face that impacted an era.
