Stolen Coin Collection

I was young when I got the first coin I loved. I don’t even remember much about it. I remember it was bronze. I remember it was larger than a quarter and I remember it made me want more. So as a young Scrooge McDuck I was collecting any kind of coin I could get my hands on. Old coins, foreign currency, stuff that may have just been flattened rocks. I was obsessed and I had the display folder to prove it.

Coin collecting was a passion for me before I could even really understand why anyone would care about a coin collection. Little did I know, these things have value and they are something people really get into. Some of those people are criminals.

When I was twelve our house was robbed. They didn’t get much, a VCR, some stereo equipment and (stifle that gasp) my coin collection.  I never got my prized coin collection appraised. I simply went along ignorantly taking coins from my grandparents and the ground, never once considering their value.

When I look back I suspect I lost a lot that day. Those coins meant a lot to me. They still do. If I could go back tomorrow, I would have locked up that collection. Now it is too late.
