Appraising Your Coin Collection

Having a coin collection is just a great deal of fun, for some. You want to see how many of a specific mint or design you can get and feel accomplished in completing a set. For others though, it’s about really finding coins that are worth something. You never know if the coins sitting in your coin holders are worth a pretty penny (pun intended!). It’s important to appraise your coins for that reason.

There are several books to help you appraise coins yourself. The Red Book is published annually and has been for the last 60 years. For a novice, this book is perfect. It teaches about mint marks, varieties and histories of various coins. The Black Book has a list of the wholesale price of various coins.

The “Greysheet” is considered to be the definitive source of a coins value. It’s what most dealers will pay you for a coin. It isn’t the easiest document to interpret and takes some real knowledge of the field.

If you feel that you aren’t at the point where you can appraise coins yourself, check to see if there is a dealer in your area. Often they will give you a rough estimate for free. Then you can decide whether to sell or keep holding on to them!
