Reagan Coin Supplies

coin suppliesRonald Reagan, the 40th president of the U.S., is dearly beloved. So much so that after J.F.K. I’d say he’s probably the most popular president of the second half of the 20th century (it’s still too soon for Clinton’s sex scandal to be forgotten and for him to occupy that spot. Maybe when he dies). Anyway, Reagan is going to have coin supplies with his face on them.

The Ronald Reagan Commemorative Coin Act of 2011 will authorize coin storage of 300,000 silver dollars and 50,000 $5 gold dollars. Passage is still up in the air because the coin is to bear an inscription commemorating Reagan’s 100th birthday, February 6, 2011, but the coin wouldn’t be minted until 2017.

On the obverse will be a olive branch and arrow-holding eagle flying over a second eagle in a nest with hatchlings.  This is interesting. It’s like we’re entering the next generation of America, where we’re no longer a young country (by the way, I noticed that on the obverse of the Susan B. Anthony coin supplies the eagle is flying over the moon, reflecting the space era obsessed seventies). On the front will be the late President’s face. So the coins minted reflect the nation’s paradigm. Clearly we miss Reagan as we ascend into the heights of the next century.
