Choose an Andrew Johnson for Coin Collecting

coin collectingAndrew Johnson, 17th President of the U.S. from 1865-69, finally gets to stand in the limelight with a new addition to the Presidential coin collection. And learning about these presidents is part of the fun of coin collecting.  Succeeding arguably the greatest president is no easy challenge, and Johnson, a Southern Republican from Tennessee did his darndest.

Johnson was a Unionist and didn’t believe the Southern States had ever seceded. He was the only Southern Senator to not quit his post when war began. In 1864, he was nominated Vice President so that after Lincoln’s assassination, he didn’t have one of his own. The Presidential Reconstruction was his idea, and he had difficulty with Radical Republicans who wanted to more severely punish the Southern States.

A big reason for why you’d never think to see Johnson’s face on coin supplies is his impeachment. It started when he removed Secretary of War, Edwin Stanton after vetoing the Tenure of Office Act, which had been enacted by Congress to keep Stanton in place. Johnson claimed the Senate’s attempt to override his firing of a cabinet member was unconstitutional, which in 1926, was proclaimed by the Supreme Court in Myers v. United States to be just that.

After his presidency, he served another term in the Senate, the only president to have done so. He was an alcoholic, self-important, and bumbled Reconstruction so much that today he is considered one of the worst Presidents ever. But you still need him for your coin collection.
