Coin Collections for Kids

You may pride yourself on your coin collection and the thousands it may be worth, but it’s not something you would let your kids play around with. Consider getting them started on their own coin collections so they can learn both patience and how to appreciate the small things.

An easy way to get started is by having them collect coins of a certain year, or various designs. This way they won’t have to worry about coin worth or rarity. A great choice for kids starting out is with state quarters. A state quarter map is easy to find, which has slots to hold each quarter from each state across a map of the United States. It’s a great geography lesson for the kids as well.

Another cheap and easy alternative is having them start a collection of Lincoln pennies. There are plenty of coin folders that hold pennies between certain years. Pick a more recent folder, like one that spans from the 1990s to the late 2000s. These will be easier to find. Once they fill that folder out, if they are still dedicated, you can buy them folders of older pennies that will take more time and patience to locate.

If they like the idea of foreign countries and traveling, consider collecting foreign coins. Start with something easier to get their hands on, like Canadian coins, and then continue from there. If  you know anyone going out of the country, ask them to save some of their change for your child to collect. And if your family tends to travel as well, it’s easy for them to collect them in person.
